I recently bought a mid-late ipod classic off my roommate:

It's a 30 gig ipod video but its drive was uninitialized, which means...
I need itunes. But it turns out that itunes as it runs on MacOS 9 (which goes up to iTunes 2) doesn't support the ipod, presumably because it's from 2005. So! I need to put OSX on the iBook G3 since I have nothing else for running itunes

We'll see how this develops....

Well a few hours later and I got MacOS 10.3 installed.

But itunes won't install on less than 10.3.9, so I'm upgrading that...

at least 10.3.9 came out roughly when the ipod video came out, so I think it'll be recognized?

I downloaded the latest version of iTunes on a work Windows-laptop, and it worked straight away on my old iPod. I think mine might be the same as yours.

I have an iPod nano that I found and decided to put to use after a good amount of time in storage, but I want to pull out the content that's in there. Once I'm able to back up what's there, I plan to install Rockbox on it. Been ages since I've used RB, but from the looks of it, it has come a long way since I last used it which was in the late 2000s, early 2010s.

No, but I didn't want to find a Windows install.

10.3.9 recognized the ipod but because itunes doesn't come with the ipod system software, initializing the ipod failed. I had to have my roommate do the initial setup, then I was able to sync with Panther on the G3 iBook.

Of course the battery is dead so there's that. Once I get a working 30 pin cable in and a working battery I need to figure out how I wanna handle conversion too. Obviously I need to get syncing working on Linux since the Mac only has a 3gb hard drive (and OSX eats up like 2GB of that.) Maybe some music apps still deal with all the ipod bullshit and will autoconvert for me.

Somewhere in a dark corner, hidden deep down the underground cellars of my memory, lingers the thought that many years ago I have used a Linux driver, to put music on the iPod.

But, I am not totally sure...

It actually turns out that rhythmbox still recognizes and syncs ipods! I went and loaded it up with some music yesterday.

The only regression(? I didn't have an iPod back in the day,) is that Rhythmbox is unable to eject or automount the ipod, I have to mount it and unmount it through Thunar/udisks.

Yeah! got a new battery swapped in today and it's running great. Don't have any audio quality problems. I did have to pick up the battery and reseat it though, unless you have it REALLY flush against the case then the hard drive won't fit.

I guess thread over kinda. I have a working ipod?
