SvarDOS

Post by UndeTerminated »

If there are any fans of DOS, there exists a distribution called SvarDOS which makes life a little bit easier - it has a package manager, but of course it needs bootstrapping network first. Packages can be downloaded from another computer and installed without network connection. It can even run Links!

I played around for a while with it in DosBox-X, installation was super straightforward, packages installation is easy, only a network is pain. Of course if you want to play DOS games, there is no point to install it, but it should be nice choice if you want to run DOS on bare metal.

A DR-DOS fork? Looks like a fun thing to play with, tho the documentation is... literally a wall of text, this doesn't look fun to read at all

EDIT: it renders as just one long string in Links but with proper paragraphs in LibreWolf? Dafuq did they do
if it ain't broke, I'll break it so I have something to fix

Seems to be based on "Enhanced DR-DOS (kernel and tools)", I do not know details. Except of "help" available from website and inside the system I was not looking for any other documentation.

yeah, it's the help stuff on the site that doesn't render properly in Links. It seems to rely on the browser rendering \n properly instead of turning it to whitespace

I had seen a post about this some time ago on Slashdot and was curious. I'd played around a bit with FreeDOS, but never did anything of interest with it. Since it is a DR-DOS fork and it says that it should have a better time of running older Windows compared to FreeDOS, I thought I'd give it a test drive and see. I just haven't had the time with work and all.
